I went natural on August 13, 2014. And within the last year, I have finally discovered the natural hair regimen that works for my active lifestyle. Here’s the lifestyle, so you can understand the issues I’m trying to address:
- I run 5 miles a day at least 5 days a week, and I am a HEAVY sweater.
- I have about 30 minutes each morning that I use to get showered, dressed, and to do my hair.
- I have some pretty sensitive skin, so I’m really conservative with the hair product experimentation.
Wearing my hair natural is actually the best solution for my active lifestyle. I look amazing every day (by my own judgement, of course) but only spend about 7 minutes on my hair each day. I was really fearful in the beginning – which you can tell by this video I created about my “predicament” of trying to maintain my active lifestyle and still be kind to my new to natural hair. But at this point, I’ve learned that over time your hair is going to forgive you for mistakes and new learnings, so maintain the lifestyle and then figure out the hair. ———————————————————————————– By the way, here’s my daily hair regimen; which is the most simple hair care regimen I’ve found for women on the go:
- Immediately after my 5-mile run, I co-wash my hair while I shower. What is Co-washing? Replacing shampoo with conditioner when you wash your hair. You still have to work at using your hands to wash away all the sweat and dirt, but you don’t apply shampoo because you don’t need it every day. I only wash my hair with shampoo every 4-6 weeks.
- Once I’m done co-washing my hair, I pat off the excess water. While my hair is still damp, I apply a leave-in conditioner. I use Cantu Shea Butter Leave-in Conditioner because I can use a little bit and it leaves my hair really soft and manageable.
- To seal in moisture, I apply coconut oil with my hand by working it in to my scalp and trying to make sure I cover as many of the hair strands as I can. And again, a little goes along way because you only need the oil to help your hair hold in moisture. Forget the myth about using oil to make your hair look shiny. It does that on it’s own if you take care of it properly. I use Viva Labs Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil, but I think any organic extra virgin coconut oil should work. Viva Labs just always has a great price on Amazon, and that’s where I like to order my hair products.
- And THAT’S IT. I use my fingers to manipulate my curls a little bit or pick out areas that I think need it but because I wear a short curly fro (a TWA), there’s really nothing else to it.
I do NOT dry my hair because MOISTURE IS WONDERFUL FOR NATURAL HAIR. My curly hair air dries over the course of the morning while I’m moving around at work. I don’t use a comb or a brush because I just really love the way my hair looks when I let it do its own thing. It’s SO curly and soft. By the way, here’s a recent pic of my hair just doing its own thing. I love it and not because I spend money every week to get it done because at this point, I spend about $15/every three months on hair products and $15 every now and then to get my ends trimmed by a licensed barber. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is to stop being afraid of my hair. It’s going to be beautiful regardless. I just have to love it.
